Rockers are Keane on America’s byways

If British rock group Keane’s North American tour has accomplished anything, it’s shown the trio that they’ve really made it in the music business.
“This is exactly what you want to do when you’re a little guy who wants to grow up – or not grow up – and be in a band,” drummer Richard Hughes told the Track yesterday before the group’s show in Portland, Maine.
Hughes and his bandmates, singer Tom Chaplin and keyboardist Tim Rich-Oxley – who play the Bank of America Pavilion tonight – have been on one long road trip across the United States and Canada promoting their sophomore album, “Under the Iron Sea.” (The tour was postponed last year when frontman Chaplin went into rehab.)
“We’ve really just been having fun and chilling out,” Hughes said. “Not hitting it too hard and just enjoying shows.
“We’ve loved just sightseeing and we feel ridiculously lucky to see more of this country than even a lot of Americans can. I mean, unless you’re a truck driver, you’re not going to just randomly get a day off to check out the Moab desert.”
But Hughes says there is one thing he and his fellow Keane members won’t get to do during their tour – catch a Red Sox [team stats] game at Fenway Park [map].
“It just feels like the last three times we’ve been in Boston we arrive just when (the Sox) are out of town,” Hughes said. “It’s something I’d really like to do.”
Keane will perform tomorrow afternoon for MIX 98.5 listeners in the MIX Lounge before hitting the stage at the Pavilion.
