Keane 12/12/2006, Apple Store London

Keeley Bolger 13 December 2006, 4:27 PM

One thing we’ve always liked about Keane is their fans. They’re the type to chat nicely in queues and share their brollies amongst the wet and the freezing. Something which we appreciated as we shivered our way over to London’s Regent Street last night to see Keane play a special acoustic set at the Apple Store.

We have just enough time to cosy up inside before Keane slink on to the stage – they’re really very svelte in actual life you know – all Chelsea boot-clad and rosy cheeked and dangling pop carrot ‘Nothing In My Way’ in front of our very appreciative eyes. Egged on by the cheers and sing-a-longs, Tom, Tim and Richard bring ‘Everybody’s Changing’ – the first song they recorded – to the table. Oh, is that our contact lens coming out or just pure salty emotion? We can’t be sure but we soon wipe it away to enjoy last single ‘Crystal Ball’ and chuckle at Tom’s jape that “2006 must’ve been strange if we started using guitars”.

The band then shuffle the iPod to ‘fun’ mode and bash out ‘Dirrtylicious’ – a Keane-stamped mash of ‘Dirrty’ by Christina Aguilera and ‘Bootylicious’ by Destiny’s Child. Tom jokes: “I’m not sure the front row were thinking my body was too bootylicious!” Hilarious.

“This is our final gig of 2006,” says Tom. “It’s been a weird year of huge highs and quite strange lows. This is a song that we wrote when we were trying to make sense of the world around us and who we are. Let’s end this year on a good note.” A good note as in ‘Somewhere Only We Know’? Yes? A very good note indeed. Bravo, Keane!
