CHUNDER THE IRON SEA
KEANE TOUR DELAY AS TOM FALLS SICK
Liz & Beverley Lyons

KEANE’S tour risked being called off again when Tom Chaplin contracted a mystery illness after surfing with pals.

The troubled singer was laid low with severe vomiting after being engulfed by a huge wave off the Cornish coast at New Year.

It would have been the second time the band’s Under The Iron Sea tour had been scuppered by Chaplin’s health.

Their first attempt to hit the road was postponed last August when Tom booked himself into the celebrity rehab centre The Priory admitting he was hooked on cocaine and booze.

Keane resumed their tour in November and were due to continue with five US dates this week.

But Tom told the Razz how close it came to disaster yesterday while he waited at the US Embassy in London to have his passport stamped.

He said: “We all went surfing in Cornwall over New Year. The weather wasn’t great but there was lots of wind – great for surfing.

“We were in the water for a while and suddenly I got hit by this huge wave. I went under for a while and swallowed lots of water.

“I thought I was fine but the next day I came down with this terrible illness and couldn’t stop throwing up.

“I was vomiting for days on end – I think I got legionnaires’ disease or something similar.

“It couldn’t have been food poisoning because we all ate the same food.

“I definitely got something in the water.” Chaplin was in bed for four days with severe vomiting.

He looked as if he had lost quite a bit of weight when he was first seen following his ordeal.

But he insisted he was fighting fit again as the three-piece prepared to fly off to perform at The Wiltern in Los Angeles.

They will then work their way north to Canada before heading back to the UK to play 10 arena dates, including Glasgow’s SECC on March 7.

Keane hit the music scene in May 2004 with their debut album Hopes and Fears.

It sold more than five million copies and went on to be the biggest-selling UK album that year.

They went on to win Best Album and Best Breakthrough Artist at the Brits in 2005, then songwriter and keyboard player Tim Rice-Oxley picked up a coveted Ivor Novello award.

As their global acclaim grew, they were nominated for another 11 awards, including a prestigious Grammy in 2006 for Best New Act and again this year for Best Pop Performance.

But the overwhelming success was too much for 27-year-old Tom.

Just weeks after Under The Iron Sea was released last June, he booked into The Priory with drug problems.

There he met Pete Doherty and Justin Hawkins, who were both also being treated for substance abuse.

They collaborated musically before Tom checked out last October.

The singer’s treatment is said to be ongoing.
