Chaplin: Fat jibes drove me to drugs
EXCLUSIVE: CLEAN KEANE STAR TOM REVEALS HOW INSULTS TOOK TOLL
27/10/2007

Is it any wonder Keane frontman Tom Chaplin had a battle with drugs after the cruel jibes from other bands?

In his first newspaper interview since leaving rehab, the 28-year-old singer tells us how bitchy comments about his appearance made him want to “run away”.

“I took a lot of what was said to heart and it had a really, really bad effect on me as a person,” he said.

“It made me very insular and I just wanted to run away from things. At the end of the day, it was very hurtful.”

Since Keane exploded on to the music scene, Tom has endured endless snipes about his looks, his weight and his middleclass roots – and he used drugs to numb the pain.

Kasabian’s Tom Meighan bitched that Tom lives on a diet of “pies and Quavers”, while Serge Pizzorno sniped that he was “posh” and “addicted to port”.

And after he entered rehab for cocaine addiction last August, other bands such as Oasis and Coral lined up to rubbish him – branding him a “lightweight”. But the lovely singer said: “A lot of bands want to have their voices heard and it’s a shame when you devalue that by making pointless, bitchy comments aimed at others.

“If they’re not selling enough records, some groups try to redress the balance by slagging other people off.

“We’re all from the same school and have the same dream, and it’s a bit upsetting, not to mention pointless. I’ve become immune to a lot of things and I’ve had to develop a thick skin. Becoming big changed everything.

“I found the comments other people made – particularly the personal ones – very, very hard to take.”

Looking incredibly fit and healthy, Tom has put it all behind him: “You can get sucked into a negative way of thinking but, thankfully, you bounce back.”

And the brilliant band are certainly doing that – by roping in all their showbiz mates for a gig in aid of War Child.

The show, at London’s Brixton Academy on November 1, is to be curated by the boys and features Lily Allen, Pet Shop Boys and Guillemots. And Tom says: “We came up with the idea for War Child and we’re so excited if petrified.

“There’s a high possibility of me and Lily doing something together on stage and there’s going to be loads more surprises. We’re proud to be a part of it.” Welcome back, Tom.

    没想到背后还有这种事情,只想说那些靠骂人来搏出位的band真是够了。Tom你们才会是一直走下去的那一支band,所以很高兴你们挺过了那段日子。现在一切都好了。
